This is where we started in the academic town of Nsukka with our center for composite research and development (CCRD) unit established as an interdisciplinary centre for carrying out teaching, research, design and development in the field of local materials processing and their applications.

JuNeng NigLtd constantly focuses on innovative research and evolving new developments to keep pace with the demands of modern life. Bio-reactors to create energy from waste; space and energy saving toilet systems for our modern smart cities; telecommunications towers that are invisible to radio waves; fire safe composite infrastructures that provide safety and comfort to the public; just some of the recent developments that are contributing towards everyday life.

JuNeng NigLtd has a long and strong tradition of participating in national and international research projects. This is an efficient approach for staying ahead and establishes good relations to major research institutes, leading customers, and test facilities. JuNeng NigLtd has close contact with research institutions like: National Agency for Science & Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), National Automotive Council Nigeria (NACN), Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Federal Institute of Industrial Research (FIIRO), Institute of Agricultural Research and Training (IART), National Centre for Agricultural Mechanization, National Centre for Energy Research and Development, National Institute for Freshwater Fisheries Research (NIFFR), National Institute of Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD), National Research Institute for Chemical Technology (NARICT), National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Nigerian Academy of Science Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI), Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research (NIOMR), Nigerian Institute for Oil Palm Research (NIFOR), Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC), Rubber Research Institute of Nigeria (RRIN).

The majority of our research activities and programmes have been related to national and local applications, but JuNeng NigLtd has also participates in several EU and International funded research fairs, such as COMPOSITE EUROPE and JEC WORLD. The majority of research projects have been within the composite industry, but JuNeng NigLtd is also involved in infrastructure protection research projects and various environmental research projects for pollution control systems, thermal energy technologies, water and wastewater systems, waste and recycling technologies, renewable energy and geosynthetic solutions.

Research has mainly been within the areas of material characterization and testing, bonding, structural surveillance and monitoring, non-destructive testing, vessel design, fire safety/fire properties, risk analysis, and finally classified topics like e.g. radar signature (absorption/reflection), electromagnetic shielding, blast and fragment resistance and underwater shock resistance.

Testing and characterization of composite materials is a field of expertise which is absolutely necessary to be able to perform, understand, develop, and produce optimized composite constructions/structures.

JuNeng NigLtd boasts a fully equipped test centre, to support the needs of our customers and partners. Full mechanical testing and product performance testing capabilities are supplemented with the most sophisticated material analysis equipment. 

JuNeng NigLtd has close collaboration with the mechanical test facilities/laboratories at Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON), National Agency for Science & Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), National Automotive Council Nigeria (NACN), Federal Institute of Industrial Research (FIIRO), etc. JuNeng NigLtd also has a history of relations with several institutes around Europe as e.g. COMPOSITE EUROPE, Germany, JEC World, Paris, France, 

The testing conducted by JuNeng NigLtd aids the development of new products as well as verifying the quality of existing products.  Through mechanical testing the absolutely necessary material parameters (strength and stiffness in the main directions of the laminates) are determined. The testing is performed after European (ISO) or American (ASTM) standards and consists of several different types of tests. After the testing is performed, it is a long and complex mathematical and theoretical path from these results to the layer -material data necessary to be able to perform complex analysis, and through them, optimizes any composite construction (geometric and material design working together).

Capabilities: Chemical Analysis, Physical Testing, Mechanical Testing, Weathering, Corrosion Resistance, and Fire Testing

The mechanical testing not only provides necessary data, but also a quality assurance of the reinforcements, resins and production method applied by the yard or workshop.

Testing of structural parts as joints (T- and L-joints, overlap- joints, but –joints, etc.) also tells if the produced items behave as desired and has the necessary strength.

JuNeng NigLtd Innovation Unit is an incubator of new technologies. It nurtures and grows certain technologies and services offerings to the point that particular business activity can be spun off to a new business entity. Composite Materials Technologies was one of these successful business units which is now a leading provider of infrastructure and industrial composite solutions to the local Nigeria market.

Our Composite Innovation Centre is a hub for composite materials incubation and development committed to support and stimulate economic growth through innovative research, development and application of composite materials and technologies for industries and to be a catalyst for creating new business opportunities in Nigeria.

Specifically, our innovation and incubation unit is a technology solutions provider for the composites industry in Nigeria and other African countries using targeted core technical capabilities and a large national and international network of research and commercialization organizations. Education and training activities are a key focus to ensure the development of critical skills and resources that are needed by this expanding industry sector.

Typically, JuNeng NigLtd has catalysed composite technology development in Nigeria in many ways starting from product conceptualization, knowledge creation in terms of product design & material selection, nurturing the technology into prototype development, incubation and finally commercialization. Our activities have created a significant and measurable impact towards composite technology development & its subsequent application. The experiences in technology incubation & development for various composite products, their properties and application potential needs maximization.

While we recognize that the Federal Ministry of Science & Technology facilitates the development and deployment of many scientifically and technologically R&D programmes in Nigeria, the knowledge flow to the industry has not come up to the desired level. It is high time to bring the technology sourcing avenues and industries together on one platform for technology development, incubation, transfer & subsequent commercialization.

We at JuNeng NigLtd strongly encourages a ‘Composites Technology Park or Incubation Center‘ to promote such activities.

This could generate a significant boost to the usage of composites while simultaneously evolving specialized products towards commercialization and thus boost Nigeria economy. And that is the strategic aim of our innovation and incubation unit, a mission for incremental development of capabilities through targeted research projects, training programs and evolving strategies for more effective national level open access, self-sustaining facility that in general supports Nigeria’s composites industry in the field of Designing, Manufacturing and Testing and in particular supports industrial and entrepreneurial initiatives for development and incubation of commercializable technologies related to polymeric fiber reinforced composites. Therefore, providing a platform for Industry and Academia to come together for evolving a national strategy for R&D in this sector.
